Affluent foreign-born parents in New York City are sending their children to public schools in much greater proportion than native-born parents with the same incomes.

The litany of bad news about the status of black men in higher education is by now familiar. They make up barely 4 percent of all undergraduate students, the same proportion as in 1976. They come into college less prepared than their peers for the rigors of college-level academic work. Their completion rates are the lowest of all major racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.
A staggering manufacturing system in China has made it possible for Apple and other companies to make devices almost as quickly as they can be dreamed up, but for workers, it can be dangerous.
Building Apple’s iPhone in the United States would demand much more than hiring Americans — it would require transforming the national and global economies.

In Bosnia Herzegovina, students from the same neighborhoods study in separate buildings, they speak different languages, and they fight. Where before they were united against a common enemy, today, there is disdain. Before the war, everyone learned in the same room. Muslims and Christians alike. Since the war ended, the people in charge of such matters thought it better to keep the two communities apart.

The Croats study in the school’s cheerful looking main building, which was recently renovated. The Muslims attend class in the crumbling, dingy annex next door…
“These politicians all used to go to school together under one roof,” said Mr. Masic. “For centuries, we have always lived together, not next to each other,” he said in an interview in Sarajevo. “This is a problem which has only existed for 20 years.”
I find this quite short sided at best and downright ridiculous other times. As an outsider, however, it’s hard to judge without understanding more about it.
